Musiqtone is an online music news & media website founded by two former students at Indiana's Purdue University in 2002. Originally called MusicMania, and changed to Musiqtone in 2005, its original aim was to cover the mainstream music world in a "fair and balanced manner". In 2003, the site changed its focus to covering both the mainstream, indie, and the underground, giving credence to the "balanced focus
moniker, still use in practice today but not overtly worded out on the website anymore. The triple focus gives today's music fan an all-access pass into the music world, even learning about acts that deserve just as much attention as their major-label counterparts that they hope to be part of.
In addition, Musiqtone has links to various music sites, online music magazines, and other resources as well as offering advice and the know-how for indie and underground acts to make their mark in their craft.
Musiqtone's indie and underground coverage is paced by it's flagship feature, You Gotta Know. YGK showcases two new and/or emerging acts in the indie and underground, giving them a big step up towards their ultimate goal, a record deal or exposure into the mainstream. YGK alums include Sarah VonderHaar, The Academy Is, Lydia Gray, Amanda Shelly, Powerspace, Curtis Peoples, Nathan Morris, Veronica Ballestrini, and Ashley Gearing.
Musiqtone's mainstream coverage is powered mostly by it's associations with various music management firms, management companies, the musician/band themselves, and various major recording labels such as Capitol Records, Universal/Motown/Republic, Island Records, Fueled By Ramen, Warner Music Group, and Hollywood Records. The site also maintains a link with AOL Music, incorporates video materials from YouTube, Myspace.com, and Y! Music. The site also maintains its own watermarked video player.
Musiqtone has no physical boundaries, with staff from LA to Boston but it's central location is considered to be in Hoffman Estates, IL, a Chicago suburb 30 minutes northwest of Chicago, the 3rd largest media market in the United States. Hoffman Estates is home to the Sears Centre, the future Prairie Creek Ampitheater, and Fueled by Ramen act The Academy Is.
