In Jonathan Clay, we may have found the third wheel to the could be Texas troika of talented singer-songwriters from the Lone Star state, having found Michael Celedon and Taylor McKenna in previous You Gotta Know runs.
Jonathan's sound is pure acoustic pop with a little folk sound, almost like John Mayer meets Jason Mraz with a touch of Josh Kelley and feloow Texan Ryan Cabrera. And like all four, Jonathan too is self-made, learning guitar and the art of writing a song on his own.
His music has seen time on a few reality offerings from MTV including the hit show 'The Hills.' But that's not why we picked him as a You Gotta Know. His take on acoustic pop/rock and putting a little folk into the genre, his potential for huge success in the singer-songwriter arena, which needs fresh blood these days, and his ability to write a song in a way that'll touch your heart and soul is why Texas' Jonathan Clay is our You Gotta Know for the month of October.
Few people are fortunate enough to know exactly what they want to do with their life. When Jonathan Clay picked up the guitar, he knew there was no going back. What started as a hobby, soon turned in to something nobody would have predicted. Now, with a national tour under his belt, and the release of his second independent album, the future is looking good for this Texas native.
Born and raised in the Houston area, Jonathan grew up with musical influences surrounding him. At 15, His father let him borrow a guitar, which Jonathan soon claimed as his own, carrying it to school every day and cutting class to practice. Feeling driven to create something original, he started writing songs as soon as he could make chords on the guitar. At 18, Jonathan moved to Austin, a city rich with culture. It was here, that he started to pave the way with local performances, and independent recordings. His debut release, "Whole New Me", was recorded by a friend and garnered quite a bit of attention. With only seven tracks, this was just a glimpse of the young, developing singer/songwriter. Songs from "Whole New Me" landed spots in numerous independent films, and nationally broadcasted television series.
Jonathan recently finished recording his second independent release, "Back To Good" (July 2007). This collection of songs shows the growth, maturity, and a little more of what's to come from this developing artist. After spending a summer in New York City, Jonathan is currently residing in Austin, Texas where he is working on new material, and honing his craft.
