The Writeup
Moms, lock up your daughters, Phil Bensen is ready to take on the world with his stylistic guitar melodies and heart melting voice that is rare in the music industry today.  His voice is so captivating it’s hard to be left not asking for more.

As a boy growing up in Hazlet, New Jersey Phil dreamed of becoming a soccer star with music being the farthest thing from his mind. This 23 year old Jersey native never pictured himself setting a career path with music until he was well into college. With his album being released in early June 2006 and having the pleasure of opening for bands like The Jonas Brothers, The Wailers, Teddy Geiger and Lifehouse, Bensen is well on his way to making an impact in the music industry.

Because of his voice that will leave you in awe, his soft soothing acoustic ways and likeliness to succeed, we have chosen Phil Bensen as February's You Gotta Know

Bio- Phil Bensen
If you asked him, Phil would tell you that he’s “a kid from Jersey I guess”. That’s exactly the approach he takes with his music and songwriting.  He likes to write about the circus that is, everyday life. “I like to write about things people can relate to, but from a different perspective than they’re used to…at least I hope it comes across that way. I like to think that songs like ‘high heels and a miniskirt’ and ‘paper airplanes’ have common themes, but are delivered in a unique sort of way”. With a voice reminiscent of a John Mayer or Jason Mraz, mixed with a sort of Jackson 5 Michael Jackson, you can understand why people are really taking notice.

After only briefly playing guitar and writing songs, he began to play open mics at Asbury Park’s legendary Stone Pony. And it didn’t take long for people to realize the potential of this young songwriter. The bartender gave his demo to the soundman, who gave it to the manager, and things took off from there. At least that’s how the story goes.

In 2006, Phil really turned some heads. After captivating small audiences, he landed opening slots for acts like Blues Traveler and Pete Yorn, to Teddy Geiger, Nick Lachey, and Lifehouse. He also toured the East Coast this fall with the Jonas Brothers.

As for Phil’s plans for the future, he’s taking it all in stride. “I’m in no rush”. He says. “I like this pace, and hopefully things just continue to develop as they had in 2006. I’m just trying to find my niche right now. The really exciting musicians were always those who were different, like Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, etc. I know what you’re thinking, but if I set the bar that high, falling short shouldn’t be such a disappointment”. He laughs.

And when the lights are up and the show is over, Phil is always the guy hanging around talking to everyone who was in the crowd…and that crowd gets bigger with every show.
