A Love Like Pi

An exclusive interview with Musiqtone
A Love Like Pi
A Love Like Pi is a group of young, talented musicians hailing from Red Bank, NJ. Unlike many other bands, they add synthesizers and many other unique instruments to their music to create some incredibly catchy and meaningful music, not to mention dance-worthy. Currently the band is in the studio with producer Kenny Gioia (Bayside, Mandy Moore, Punchline, Cute Is What We Aim For) recording their debut CD that is to be released this summer. Here's their interview with Amanda.

Amanda Agueda
: Hey
Hodge: hey

AA: Do you have time to be interviewed now?
H: haha yeah maybe we can do part now

AA: okay!

AA: Well, can you introduce yourself and state what your role is in the band for our readers?
H: My name is Hodge and I play synthesizers in A Love Like Pi

AA: Can you describe your music for anyone who isn't familiar with it?
H: I would say it’s a mixture of Electronica and Rock music

AA: How did A Love Like Pi get started?
H: Collin (bass) and Lief (singer/guitar) had a band previous to ALLP while they were in high school
H: Lief’s younger brother played drums
H: I went to school with Lief and Collin actually lived on the same street as me
H: I went to the majority of their shows and showed a lot of interest in playing music with them
H: Lief told me they were looking for a keyboard player
H: so I gave up guitar and started playing keyboards
H: a few months later Lief’s younger brother (Asa) left the band and we replaced him with Chris
H: Chris played in another local band that we were friends with
H: the first show we played with Chris we decided to change our name
H: to show that we were getting more serious and to mark a new chapter as a band
H: that was a little less than 2 years ago
H: oh sorry
H: haha
H: our previous name was A Love Like Pi
H: oops
H: I mean Blind and Driving
H: now we are A Love Like Pi
AA: haha okay

AA: So where did the name A Love Like Pi come from?
H: Lief thought of the name
H: love is like pi in a lot of ways
H: its endless, people have been trying to figure out the secret to pi for hundreds of years, it’s irrational
AA: Very true
H: its a key element to many different equations

AA: You're in the studio right now, correct?
H: haha yes we are

AA: How's that going?
H: its going great
H: we are very excited to record these new songs

AA: What's the writing process like?
H: usually Lief will come to practice with an idea and we will write around it

AA: What are your musical influences?
H: haha this is always the worst question
AA: haha sorry!
H: we all listen to a lot of different things
H: no no don’t be
H: well I guess our main influences would be The Cure, The Postal Service, and The Get Up Kids

AA: Okay so what can people expect from your live shows?
H: our live shows are pretty nutty
H: a lot of craziness and insanity
H: we try to bring a lot of energy to the stage

AA: Do you have any upcoming tour plans?
H: it’s still being worked on but we should be touring out to California this summer

AA: Who would you like to tour with in the future?
H: we'd like to tour with anyone who shares the same dreams that we have

AA: Has anything embarrassing ever happened while you were performing?
H: haha yes
H: being in an electronic band there are always technical difficulties
H: one time we all played in onesies
H: and another time we played in our boxers
H: it was funny because about a year after we played in our boxers we played a show with Cobra Starship and All Time Low
H: and the guys from All Time Low came up to me and were like "you were the band that played in your boxers!"
H: haha
AA: hahaha
AA: That was at The Stone Pony right?
H: I guess you can say we're a spontaneous band
H: exactly

AA: What made you want to pursue a career in music?
H: it was always something that I found fascinating
H: most of my idols are musicians or performers
H: so growing up I did a lot of acting and singing
H: but I found that playing in a band seemed like the most exciting thing I could possibly do

AA: What is your best memory about being in A Love Like Pi?
H: there was a time when we were on tour
H: and it was 4 in the morning
H: I was driving the van down to Florida and everyone was in the back sleeping
H: the sky was so clear and I could see a lot of shooting stars and the moon reflecting off the water
H: at that point I realized that this is truly what I love to do
H: I want to play this music for anyone and everyone
AA: Sounds amazing.

AA: Okay last question!
AA: What's your favorite thing about being in A Love Like Pi?
H: being with my best friends almost everyday and playing music in places all around the world is a dream come true

AA: Okay, well thanks Hodge for sitting in out Hot Seat today!
H: haha no no thank you!
