The Australian five piece from Sydney, Australia, 5 Seconds of Summer, formed in 2011 when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, and Calum Hood started posting videos of them singing popular songs on YouTube. Their cover of Chris Brown’s “Next To You” received over 600,000 views, and then in December of 2011 Ashton Irwin joined them as their drummer and 5 Seconds of Summer was born.
Despite having no professional promotion other than Twitter and Facebook, the band signed with Sony ATV Music Publishing and released their first EP Unplugged, which reached number 3 on both the Australian charts. Since releasing their EP, their following has increased greatly because of the attention they’ve gotten from members of One Direction. When the band released their first single “Out Of My Limit” in November 2012, One Direction’s Niall Horan tweeted the link and the bands following grew even more.
5 Seconds of Summer then spent the remainder of 2012 working on new songs with members of Australian band Amy Meredith. The guys worked with Christian Lo Russo and Joel Chapman from Amy Meredith where they wrote two songs featured on their new EP Somewhere New, which was also co produced by Joel Chapman. In December of 2012, the boys continued on a songwriting trip to London where they wrote with various artists including McFly, Roy Stride, Nick Hodgson, Jamie Scott, Jake Gosling, Steve Robson, and James Bourne of Busted.
After their London writing trip, it was announced in February 2013 that 5 Seconds of Summer would be opening for One Direction on their Take Me Home world tour. The band will follow One Direction to countries including the USA, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. While on their short break from the Take Me Home tour, 5 Seconds of Summer played a national headlining tour where all of the dates sold out in minutes.
Currently the boys are traveling with One Direction and simultaneously working on their debut album. Be sure to check out 5 Seconds of Summer on one of the Take Me Home tour dates and stay tuned to what they’re up to via Facebook and Twitter!
