In the age where technology united the world and people can share information at lightning speed, it’s no wonder artists have turned to social media sharing sites to be heard. In recent years, YouTube has been the starting point of many careers; even the likes of Justin Bieber have had their start by sharing videos online. Gabrielle Aplin is among those musicians who have been able to take YouTube success and start a promising music career.

The twenty-one year old pop folk singer from England is riding the wave from YouTube superstardom and branching out from her bedroom walls into stadiums opening up for major music acts such as Ed Sheeran.
A musician since the age of eleven when her parents bought her her first guitar, Aplin began uploading cover songs onto YouTube. Soon her talent and soothing Birdy style vocals began to gain her views and subscribers. Among her more popular covers are “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry and “Electric Feel” by MGMT, which both have over 500,000 views. Covering a variety of artists from Cee Lo Green to Bon Iver, Aplin has put her own style on popular songs and created a sound that is uniquely her own. It’s very rare to find a cover artist on YouTube that can transform a song into their own and make you forget that it is a cover, which is why Aplin is not just another cover singer, she’s the real deal.
While studying music at City of Bath College in England, Aplin continued to purse her music career while participating in the college’s in-house label BA1 Records. Her first 5-track Acoustic EP was release through iTunes on September 13, 2010, reaching the top 25 on the UK iTunes album charts.
Proving to be a dedicated musician, Gabrielle released two more EP’s, Never Fade on May 9th 2011 and Home on January 9th 2012, both of which produced songs that got Aplin noticed and expanded her sound to a more folk pop rock genre.
It wasn’t long before her talent landed her a record deal and on February 29th 2012 Aplin announced that she had signed with Parlophone. Under her new label Aplin began working on her debut album, English Rain, set to be released on May 13th 2013. The first single off of the album was a cover of the ever so popular track “The Power of Love” originally made famous by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The single got the attention of listeners who helped it reach #1 in the UK, exactly 28 years after the original Frankie Goes to Hollywood single topped the charts.
Taking the English charts by storm, English Rain charted at #2 both on the UK and Scottish album charts and reached #11 in Ireland.
The talented twenty-one year old has showcased her hauntingly sweet vocal all throughout Europe on her own headlining tours as well as supporting acts for artists like Gotye and Ed Sheeran on his 2013 tour of Australia and New Zealand. With Aplin making her first trip across the pond to perform her first headlining tour in the states, this singer is not stopping anytime soon.
With millions of people uploading videos everyday onto media sharing sites and social networks its unusual when you find someone who has the natural raw talent and is unique enough to be able to have an actual musical career. Gabrielle Aplin is exactly that. The English native’s unique vocals and natural ability to transform every song she sings is what makes her a force to be reckoned with. Aplin has come a long way since her first days of uploading videos onto YouTube and she is only going to go further.
