Why you should check them out: The Virginia Beach, VA quartet are basically a pair of brothers: Jeremy and Jonathan Smith & Micah and Jeremiah Ricks who craft memorable pop gems behind an awesome crackling dynamic backing sound and emotive vocals, similar to groups they have opened before including Lifehouse and Jack’s Mannequin.
The quartet, formed in 2004 when the Smith brothers subbed in for a no-show pianist and drummer in a high school concert the Ricks’ brothers were performing and after committing to the band full time in 2006, the foursome embarked on an interesting national journey as they evolved and crafted their sound by opening for several artists including Paramore and Third Eye Blind. Part of their journey was without peril however as shortly after an independent album release in 2007, the four went on a national tour that included their promoter getting hit by a car, a tire coming off their tour trailer, Jonathan suffering a concussion playing soccerUnited States, a broken collarbone for Micah, a $500 parking ticket and an owner of a club the band was supposed to play at died on the day of their last show. “I never really believed the whole ‘earn your keep’ thing, but we’ve really paid our dues,” Jeremy says.
The group, now signed to Univeral Motown Records (they were signed a mere 24 hours after an industry showcase they played at) is about to bring their fresh pop/rock sound to the mainstream by bringing aboard veteran producers who have crafted hits for some of the biggest names in music including OneRepublic, Natasha Bedingfield, Fergie, Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce and Tupac. And to top it all off, the foursome was cast as members of Miley Cyrus’ backup band in Hannah Montana: The Movie, giving them instant nationwide exposure on the big stage.
