The Spotlight

Kevin DevineBy Alan Ho

Who:  Kevin Devine

Where:  Brooklyn, New York, NY

For fans of:  Conor Oberst, Elliott Smith, Tony Lucca, Manchester Orchestra, Brand New

Why he is on The Spotlight:

The longtime indie singer-songwriter with the melodic guitar riffs and the kind of lyrical makeup that makes legends like John Fogerty, Elliott Smith and Bob Dylan proud is returning to the major label ranks (stint on Capitol in 2004) with major label power Razor & Tie (The Summer Set, Dave Barnes, Vanessa Carlton) and sporting a very different sound these days.  Ditching his solo acoustic musings, Devine is now sporting a full backing band, giving new credence sonically and musically for the gifted and poetic singer-songwriter.

His upcoming new album “Between the Concrete & Clouds” will be released September 13th, his first on the New York based label  and was recorded in a span of 10 days over one month.  On top of that, the album’s material began life as…you guessed it, acoustic demos, an act he had not done since high school (perhaps a deluxe edition down the road?)!  "The combination of Chris and Rob on this record kind of marries the best aspects of everything I’ve tried to do over the past ten years," said Kevin.  "I tried to explore a bit musically and make an album that still has a lot to chew on, but serves it with a scoop of ice cream," said Kevin.  "I took the lyrical density of what I typically write – which are not-simple stories about not-simple people, or what I feel life is most accurately like – but give them more of a traditional pop structure."

You can catch him on tour soon in September, beginning on the 6th in Pittsburgh and ends on the 20th in Upland, CA.
