The Veronicas - Concert Review

Veronicas wows crowd after so-so-opening to concert
Seeing The Veronicas live for the second time proves that they are not another girl group. In fact, they are two amazing singers that I do not expect to see lip syncing at Saturday Night Live any time soon. My first Veronicas experience was back in November, at Levi store before their performance with Ryan Cabrera later that night. The audience consisted of four fans a couple of confused shoppers, but that did not stop the girls from proving that they deserve more. Now, almost four months after, Jess and Lisa are playing to sold out crowds at decent sized venues.

The Avalon used to be a Church. Not only did this make the venue hard to find, but the acoustics of the place were not fantastic. The crowd was about 90% teenage girls, some accompanied by their parents (since the show was 16+) and some by their boyfriends; after all it was Valentines Day.

The Jonas Brothers started the show. The boy group consisted of three brothers, Joseph, Kevin, and Nicholas. Whether it was the acoustics or the rockstar-wannabe behavior (which does not fit a 13 year old), their performance was painful to me, but not for the rest of the underage crowd. I can see that these boys will go a little further with their careers, but I can guarantee you that seeing them live is not the best experience. I left their performance for a private meet and greet with the girls, thanks to me remembering their manager from the in store. Will I ever regret leaving the Jonas Brothers in the middle of the show? Never.

October Fall came up next. They were a little older, which was a relief. Their sound was extremely different from the Jonas’ so it took a little while for the audience to get used to them. Again, the sound was not its best, and a few mothers were annoyed by the keyboardist’s behavior on stage. Apart from that, their style was decent.

Meeting The Veronicas before the show made me remember how sweet and down to earth Lisa and Jess are. They immediately remembered me from our previous show, which was a huge surprise to me. After they signed some junk I had for them, we talked for a while, and let me assure you that fame has not changed them. When they came on stage, their powerful voices sounded amazing even with the poor acoustics of the room. They performed every song from their CD, which was released that day, except for Secret and Nobody Wins and a small cover of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” Their voices were mind-blowing when they sang acoustic versions of Speechless and Heavily Broken. Their opening bands and even Ryan Cabrera seemed to know every word to their songs, as they watched from a small VIP area above. They finished with an encore of “I could get used to this” and went to sign autographs at the merchandise table for every person in the sold out crowd.

These girls have some of the best voices in the pop music world today.  Definitely grab a copy “The Secret Life of…”, because you will be surprised with what Lisa and Jess came up with. I expect a lot from these girls in the years ahead of them.
