Will Hoge is an experienced and incredibly talented singer and songwriter from Franklin, Tennessee. Number Seven is Will’s seventh LP in his music career. Number Seven has a mix of folk and rock influences and is his second album since the scooter accident in 2008.
The first track on Number Seven, “Fool’s Gonna Fly”, is about an unhappy relationship. This is a good opener to the album as it has a sound that is very easy to listen to. This song is about how real relationships aren’t like the perfect relationships you see in movies. Life isn’t a fairy tale.
“Too Old To Die Young”, track number two, has a more upbeat tone than the first track and has incredibly catchy lyrics. It is about the life of man who has lived his life to the fullest and may have done some foolish things now and again, but has so many memories now that he is older, he wishes he had more time because he still feels like a young man.
Next on the album is “Goddam California”. The beat is slower again and seems to have much more of a country influence. This song is about how cold the people in California are compared to being in Tennessee where people treat you like family. In the chorus he says “Nobody here will ever warn you, just how cold it call can be.” He is implying that being famous is lonely and everyone in California is just there to “be somebody” rather than just be themselves.
The fourth track, “American Dream”, starts with Will talking more than singing. He’s telling a story of how things used to be. It’s about how the United States is outsourcing more jobs to foreign countries and the factories here are closing. It’s about a man who doesn’t have a home and refers to the streets as his bed. He’s implying that the “American Dream” is dying and since he doesn’t have anything left, he’s “free”.
“Gone”, the fifth track on the album has a faster beat than the previous two songs. This is a song that I would love to listen to while driving around and a catchy chorus. It has a more contemporary country sound. This song is about a girl who isn’t around anymore and all the man has left is “gone”.
Track six, “The Illegal Line” is about illegal immigrants from Mexico crossing the border into the United States. It’s about a man who has to work in the United States to have a living and he sends the money he makes back home to his family. The man gets caught and is sent to court and put in jail for being in the United States illegally. Will Hoge takes a political issue and makes it something much more human and relatable.
“Silver Chain”, track seven, seems to be about a relationship. The man wishes that he was a silver chain so that he didn’t have to feel any pain and that he would be admired because he would never rust. He wishes he was a coal so that he could be a diamond. The chorus states that the person he is in a relationship with will lie until the very end. The man wants to be a wishing well so he can make wishes come true. He seems to want to be so many things so that he can be appreciated.
Next on the album is “Nothing to Lose”. The sound is much more upbeat than the others, however the lyrics aren’t as happy as the music makes the song seem to be. The song is about a relationship where the girl is a liar. He refers to her as “a little piece of hell” and she gave him “nothing to lose”. Even though this song isn’t the strongest on the album, lyrically, it is one of my favorites.
“Nothing to Lose” is a good lead in to track number nine, “No Man’s Land”. This song is about a couple which consists of two people who are complete opposite. He refers to the girl as fine wine and himself as whiskey and that she’s from Venus and he’s from Mars. This song has an incredibly catchy chorus that makes you want to sing along.
“Trying To Be A Man” slows the album down again. This is a song from a father to a son. He starts off by saying he fell in love with a little girl, and gave her his whole world. This is the most sentimental song on the album and is my favorite song as well. It’s about a man who refers to himself as “a boy trying to be a man”. He got a girl pregnant, but stood by her to raise their child, even if he wasn’t ready to do so.
The last track on the album, “When I Get My Wings”, was the first single off of the album. This song is about a man who is ready to join his wife in heaven. The couple had been together for 57 years and the man refers to going to heaven as going home to be with his wife. It has inspiring lyrics and is a great way to end the album.
Overall, the album has a steady, country tone that is easy to listen to and let you in on some of Will Hoge’s views on the world. Will has produced a solid album that will not disappoint his fans. |
