It’s been a long uphill battle as the aussie duo The Veronicas try to conquer the American music market. Their debut album “The Secret Life of,” a smash hit in their homeland, only brought about the hit “4Ever” in this side of the world. But armed with a new techno inspired sound, Jess and Lisa are giving the American airwaves another try. The result: the platinum selling single “Untouched” and their sophomore release “Hook Me Up.” But are The Veronicas finally claiming victory after almost four years? Well, anyone who has been to the Revenge is Sweeter tour will attest to that.
As someone who has been following these girls from their first trip to the US, it was humbling to see them perform to an almost sold out crowd. They drew in a crowd of boys and girls of every age. The entire front row was lined with guys trying to reach for their hands while showering them with complements. Mothers and daughters alike knew the words to every song and danced along while sporting their matching Veronicas shirt. There was a mixture of older and newer fans; yet, everyone seemed to know the words to every song. The girls were not even allowed to walk offstage before the crowd went wild for an encore.
Anyone who thinks the Veronicas are another pair of beautiful girls in tight skirts singing songs about their love lives, or a desire for one thereof, have the complete wrong impression. To put it simply, these girls are talented. Live, their techno sounds become rock anthems. Jess even adds screamo vocals during songs like “Take Me On The Floor,” “Revolution” and “Mother, Mother.” In the middle of their set, they perform “This Love” and “Heavily Broken” acoustic. This is a time for the girls to show off; their vocals are nothing short of outstanding. Their voices are definitely not fabricated. In fact, I am disappointed that their albums do not give a fair depiction of their talent.
The only disappointment of the night, however, was their set list. As expected, the girls opened their set with their hit "Untouched" and closed with "4Ever." Yet, their single "Everything I'm Not" from their first album was not played. I was surprised the girls decided to play songs like the Tracy Bonham "Mother Mother" instead of including some more popular songs from "The Secret Life" such as "Leave Me Alone." Yet the girls did a good job of playing a variety of old and new songs. My favorite of the night was the "Hook Me Up" B-Side "Everything" - which was oustanding both vocally and musically. Another highlight of the night was Lisa's dedication of "Revenge is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)" to her exboyfriend who in her words had "really, really big hair." I'm still a little skeptical about Jess's rapping ability during "Popular," which I guess you could call their 'sell out' song. But appart from that, the girls played an amazing show.
To anyone who has only heard "Untouched" on the radio please do not judge this talented duo solely on that. I recommend their live show to fans of all different genres - the girls will definitely give you a night to remember. I am proud to see how far these girls have come; I cannot see what the American market holds for Lisa and Jess in the future. The Veronicas are finally here to stay.
