Relient K

The Uncle Fest Tour- Milwaukee, WI

Acts fire on all four cylinders at WI tour stop
If you aren’t familiar with The Addams Family, you may think that “The Uncle Fest Tour” is a very weird name for a concert tour.  Seeing that it’s October, a Halloween theme only seemed appropriate for this tour headlined by Relient K with supporting acts, Ludo, This Providence, and House Of Heroes. The tour opened on October 2 in Madison, WI at the Barrymore Theatre and I was lucky enough to be there.

At exactly 7PM, House Of Heroes took the stage. Having never heard of the band, I was unsure of what to expect. I had heard their music, but you can’t judge a band’s live show off of what their CD sounds like. All in all, I was impressed. They put on a great show, playing a few songs including “If” and “Baby’s a Red,” and had the crowd dancing almost constantly. Not too many people seemed to have heard of them, so there wasn’t much singing along. That is until they played a cover of “Obla Dee Obla Da” by The Beatles. That definitely got the crowd moving. They are easily a band I would recommend seeing if given the opportunity.

Following House of Heroes was This Providence. I’ve seen them enough times to know that they are amazing live, but with the numerous member changes this band encounters, each show has a different vibe. Having not seen them in over a year, I was excited. With the release of a new EP only days later, they had to play some of their newer material. Opening with their song, “My Beautiful Rescue,” you would expect lead singer Dan to be playing the acoustic guitar while singing this slower love song. However, that was not the case. The slow love song is much faster than before, yet it’s still the same amazing song that thousands have grown to love.  Their set was only seven songs, three of them being new or renovated. Still, after seeing This Providence for the fifth time, I was blown away. They just keep getting better.

St. Louis, Missouri natives, Ludo played next. Like This Providence, I knew how their sets are. If you are looking to see a band with a unique stage presence, Ludo is the band for you. You will inevitably see lead singer Andrew making awkward faces or Tim Convy jumping and dancing around the stage. This is one band with so much energy. There is never a dull moment on stage whether it’s during the opening song, Go-Getter Greg,” the slower song, “Topeka,” or the fan favorite and hit single, “Love Me Dead.” Fans were all singing and dancing along. They were definitely one of the favorite acts that night.

Eager to see Relient K take the stage, fans began to fill up the pit area while the crew got the stage set up. One thing was for sure. This wouldn’t be your average stage set up. Covering the drums and microphone stands were fake cobwebs. There was also a giant spider sitting on the drums platform and a fake bird on the amplifier. This made everyone curious about what the show was going to be like. The equipment was set up. The stage was ready to go. It would only be minutes until Relient K hit the stage.

The set starts with Halloween music, the kind you hear when you go into a haunted house. After about a minute of the Halloween music, the crowd screamed, the lights went up, and Relient K, wearing capes and black face makeup, played their first song, “I Need You,” which led right into their second song, “Come Right Out and Say It.” Those two songs alone were amazing, but it gets better. The next song they played was, “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been.” Because this is one of their singles, there were a lot of people singing along. When they started the song, they started playing a wrong song, which they also did when they played the next song, “High of 75.” Third times the charm and they played “Mood Rings,” which is the song they had started playing the times before. From there, they moved onto a song off of “The Bird and The Bee Sides” called “The Lining Is Silver.” It was probably one of my favorite songs that they played in addition to their singles, and my favorite Relient K song, “Sadie Hawkins Dance.” The band always has so much energy during that song. That was definitely the high point of the night for me. Before “Sadie Hawkins Dance,” Relient K played “Devastation and Reform” and “The Best Thing.” They decided to take a break from their songs, and play the Addams Family Theme Song which everyone loved. It fit right in with the theme for the tour. I think the highlight of the night for a lot of the newer fans was when the band played, “Be My Escape.” Not a single person within my sight had their mouth closed during that song. Everyone was singing along and enjoying themselves. With the presidential election coming up, Matt Thiessen spoke about how they only ever wrote one political song called, “The Only Thing Worse Than Beating a Dead Horse is Betting on One,” and then proceeded to play it saying that it seemed appropriate. Two songs later, they decided to switch it up a bit, and Thiessen told the story about how they met their bassist John Warne. He was previously in a band called, “Ace Troubleshooter” which released a song titled, “Tonight,” which John proceeded to play for us. It was a bit different from the typical Relient K song, but it was undeniably a very great song. Two songs later, they walked off the stage. I sat there waiting. I knew that any second, the crowd would start the typical chanting, “ONE MORE SONG,” then the band would come back on stage and play one, or maybe more, songs. Fans were very surprised when Relient K stepped back onto the stage and started playing. For the first time ever, they played the song, “Deathbed,” in its entirety. It sounded flawless to me, although there were apparently some mistakes. They managed to get through the 11 minute song, and that was it. There set was done, and fans stood in awe. All were amazed at what they just saw, and many were very upset that the show was over. I’m positive that a few of the people were at Milwaukee’s show three days later.

This tour was easily one of the best I’ve seen. All four bands blew me away. Having only seen one of them for the first time, I thought I knew what to expect, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. If you have a chance at all to see any of these bands live, I would definitely recommend that you do. They’ll for sure have you on your feet and won’t let you down.
